Pipeworks Blood of the Unicorn Hoppy Red Ale

Beer type: Red Ale
Alcohol Level: 6.5%
Brewed By: Pipeworks Brewing Company

Pipeworks Brewing Company is another great brewery out of Chicago, IL. They’re in the Hermosa/Logan Square area not too far from me. Let’s get to the beer.

The Blood of the Unicorn is a great red ale with a lot of flavor to it. It pours as a hazy amber color and leaves a good amount of head on the top of the beer. It first smells almost like an IPA but then you taste it and you get the sweetness of a red ale with a somewhat bitter aftertaste. They serve this beer in a 16oz can and the artwork on all of their cans is amazing. If you collected their cans, you could start a small art museum.

This is a tasty beer and I’d recommend to anyone looking to branch out from the bigger Chicago craft breweries. Good stuff Pipeworks, good stuff.

Cheers

Begyle Brewing Begyle Blonde

Beer type: American Blonde Ale
Alcohol Level: 5.4%
Brewed By: Beygle Brewing Co.

Another Chicago brewery, another great beer. I’m starting to sense a trend here…Anyways, on to the beer!

This is an American Blonde Ale that has hints of honey to it in the taste and smell. Besides the honey, you can get an aroma of wheat and citrus. It has a hazy dark yellow color and it finishes well in your mouth. The aftertaste isn’t bitter nor sweet. This is a very drinkable beer that’s one of their best sellers.

Beygle Brewing says that this beer is, “Clean and balanced, with subtle fruity notes int he fermentation profile and a dry finish.” They’re located near Wrigley Field in Chicago on Cuyler.

Hopewell Brewing Family Saison

Beer type: Saison
Alcohol Level: 5.9%
Brewed By: Hopewell Brewing Company

I had this beer on draft while sitting in Hopewell the other day. Hopewell is great because they have an option to get a 22oz beer on draft and of course I’m going to say yes to that…

On to the beer, the Family Saison is a well-made, very refreshing beer. It has a sweeter taste that turns semi-bitter in the aftertaste. A saison is usually very refreshing and holds a lot of flavors and this beer does that. It has a golden-hazy color to it and a pungent citrus smell to it. It has some notes of banana and citrus in the actual flavor. Overall, a great beer to drink when it’s warm out.

Hopewell Brewing Company is based out of the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago, IL. It’s within walking distance from where I live and I need to go there more often. They have beers on draft, beers to go, and some pretty cool merchandise. Their taproom is a cool place to hang out, pet dogs, and play some board games.

Off Color Brewing Apex Predator

Beer type: Farmhouse Ale
Alcohol Level: 6.5%
Brewed By: Off Color Brewing
IBU: 35

I wrote this one while wearing an Off Color Brewing shirt. What can I say? They have great merch.

On to the beer! The Apex Predator is one of Off Color’s best and most popular beers. It has a citrus aroma to it and a golden color. When it hits your lips, a mix of citrus sweetness and bitterness mixes to create an excellent taste. The aftertaste leaves you wanting another sip right after. Overall, it’s a great selling beer and if you try this one, you’ll know why.

Off Color Brewing is a cool craft brewery out of Chicago, IL. They’re one of my favorites because they make amazing beer, have cool, hand-drawn labels, and brew a little different than some of the other guys. They have a taproom in Chicago that I’m dying to go to.

Cheers

Maplewood Brewing Co. Brownie Points

Beer type: English Brown Ale
Alcohol Level: 5.7%
Brewed By: Maplewood Brewing Company
IBU: 25

Another beer brewed in Chicago, IL. I feel like we’re starting to see a trend here…..Anyways, on to the beer. Right away, you see this is a dark brown colored beer. When poured, it didn’t have too much of a head, meaning it’s not a super carbonated beer. When drinking, it’s a smooth beer that goes down easy.

This beer is packed with beautiful flavors and smells. Right away, you get a semi-sweet smell. When you taste the beer, flavors of vanilla, toffee, even coffee come into play. The aftertaste isn’t too bitter. I started to feel my mouth water after each sip, so whatever they did, it’s working.

Maplewood Brewing Company is based out of Chicago, IL. They said this beer is, “Full of malty chocolate and toffee flavors, this beer drinks easy and finishes bold yet crisp. Oats are used to lend a creamy body and mouthfeel.” Maplewood also is a distillery, making spirits like whiskey and gin.

Goose Island Fulton St. Blend Coffee Ale

IMG_0327

Beer type: Golden Ale
Alcohol Level: 5.5%
Brewed By: Goose Island Beer Co.
IBU: 30

If you like coffee for the taste and are looking for a unique flavor of beer to try, Goose Island made this one for you. Right away, you smell the coffee blend in the beer and it transitions to a coffee aftertaste. Besides that, there’s a transition from coffee to a sweeter smell right before you drink it. The beer is a lighter caramel/golden ale color. For being a beer with coffee in it, it’s actually a lighter type of beer.

Goose Island says this beer is, “a golden ale infused with rich coffee flavor and aroma.” Until I checked their site, I didn’t know that Goose Island used Intelligentsia coffee beans for this beer. Another reason to like this beer if you’re a Chicagoan. To summarize this beer review, if you like a lighter style of beer and you like Intelligentsia, you have to give this local beer a try.

Revolution Bottom Up Wit

Review

Revolution Bottom Up Wit is one of my favorites from Revolution and any craft brewery around. A wit is just a Belgian Style Wheat Ale, different from a US Wheat Beer like a Blue Moon. Usually, if you like Blue Moon, you’d like this beer and probably like it better. It has an amazing sweet aroma and it has an easy drinkability. I’d always recommend this beer to friends who are out of town or who are newer to craft beer.

Revolution is an amazing brewery. They’re based out of Chicago and both their brew pub and their brewery is close to where I live. Not only do they brew great beer, but they have some pretty awesome merch. Yeah….I bought two pins for my backpack and I have a pair of Rev Brew drinking glasses (No Shame). Along with that, the movie Drinking Buddies was filmed in their brewery! Great movie, great beer, enough said.
